People of African descent cannot get head lice.
Head lice have been found on people throughout the world. Though it is uncommon for people of African descent to contract head lice in North America, it can happen. North American strains of head lice prefer round hair shafts that are more common to people of caucasian descent. Usually, the hair on people of African descent are more oval in shape and are hard for North American head lice to grasp. There are African strains of head lice that have adapted to the different hair shapes and textures. A common myth is that the oils used to condition this texture of hair is a repellant to head lice.
If I can purchase a head lice treatment without a prescription, it is safe.
In the United States, a prescription is required for certain head lice medications. Having a prescription means that the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) has verified the clinical information about a product and has determined it to be safe if used according to the label. See our chart of current FDA-approved products.
Not all products available in stores or on-line have gone through the FDA approval process. Though they may make claims about safety and effectiveness, they may not have scientific data to prove it. Always seek a recommendation from a trusted Health Care Professional before starting a head lice treatment.
