Helpful Hints
- RID Lice killing Shampoo is very effective when used properly. Read instructions carefully regarding dosage (long hair vs. short hair) and application (wet or dry hair) to ensure you achieve the highest level of efficacy.
- Check other family members for head lice. Follow same steps for treatment if necessary.
RID® Lice Killing Shampoo is designed to be used on DAY ONE and DAY TEN.
To apply treatment
- Protect Child's Eyes - Use towels to protect child's eyes from treatment and prevent clothes from getting wet.
- Apply RID Shampoo - Apply thoroughly to DRY HAIR or other affected area. Wetting the hair dilutes the treatment making it less effective.
- Let Set for 10 Minutes - For head lice, first apply behind the ears and to the back of the neck. Lice can crawl up and down the shaft of the hair very quickly so it is important to apply the treatment from the roots to the ends of the hair. See Usage Guidelines below to estimate how much product you will need. Allow product to remain on the hair (or other affected area) for 10 minutes, but no longer.
- Wash Out - Use warm water to form a lather, shampoo, and then rinse thoroughly.
- Comb Out - For head lice, towel dry hair and comb out tangles. A fine-toothed comb or a special lice/nit removing comb (included) must be used to remove lice, eggs, and nits from hair (see Step 2 for directions on combing).
- Repeat - A second treatment must be done in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice.
RID LICE & EGG COMB-OUT GEL
This product should be used AFTER a head lice killing treatment (Step 1). Combing out eggs & nits is an essential step for complete lice elimination.
Helpful Hints
- Combing is a very important but also tedious step in the process.
A good lice comb and an aid, such as a comb-out gel can significantly reduce combing time as well as avoid excessive pulling or tearing of the child's hair. While often underestimated, combing time can range between 1 and 8 hours, depending on length of hair.
- Carefully inspect your child daily for 2 weeks after treatment. If you see eggs or nits, repeat Step 2.
See Usage Guidelines to estimate how much product you will need.
Before starting
1) Have on hand:
- Extra Towels
- Bobby Pins or Hair Clips
- Facial Tissues or Paper Towels
- Regular comb for parting and detangling hair
2) Find a distraction for your child (e.g. books, TV, game).
- Comb Out Hair - Comb out damp hair with a regular wide-tooth comb to take out snarls and tangles.
- Apply RID® Comb Out Gel - Apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Gel to one section of hair. (Do not apply to entire head at once, since gel dries quickly.) Massage thoroughly until all strands of hair in this section are covered with the gel.
- Use RID® Egg Removal Comb - Hold the patented RID® Egg Removal comb with your thumb over the hollow side and the flat side resting on the back of your fingertips. Make sure that the teeth are facing you.
- Begin Combing - Lift a small strand of hair (about 1/2" thick) from the section with the gel. Begin combing ina "scooping" motion: gently push the teeth as close to the hair roots as possible and drag comb firmly from the roots to the ends of the hair (newly-laid eggs are found near the roots of the hair so it is important to get the teeth very close to the scalp). Make sure the teeth are deeply embedded into the strands as you comb through.
- Clean Comb Frequently - Always comb away from the head. Wipe eggs and nits from the teeth of the comb with a tissue or paper towel. Discard all the used tissues or cloths into a bag and dispose of immediately.
- Pin Back Combed Hair - Pin back the 1/2-inch strand you just finished combing with a bobby pin or hair clip.
- Repeat Combing - Lift up another 1/2-inch strand with gel and repeat the combing procedure.
- Repeat Application on Dry Section of Hair - When one section with gel has been combed and pinned, apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Gel to another section of hair. Continue to comb hair 1/2 inch at a time until entire head has been combed and pinned.
- Keep Hair Damp - Keep the hair damp during combing and re-apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Gel as needed.
- Remove Pins and Rinse - After you have combed and pinned the entire head, remove all bobby pins or hair clips and rinse hair thoroughly with warm water. If desired, you may also wash with regular shampoo.
